Medical Volunteers' Missions

Blue/Yellow Medical

In the de-occupied Ukrainian territories near the front lines, there is a significant shortage of doctors who can care for the remaining civilians. Blue/Yellow Medical is a project of regular volunteer missions by Lithuanian medical professionals, including general practitioners, nurses, and odontologists. They not only diagnose illnesses and provide one-time medical assistance but also create long-term treatment plans and supply patients with necessary medications for several months. After that period, they return to follow up and continue treating their patients.

Blue/Yellow Medical are regular missions of volunteer Lithuanian medics to the regions of Ukraine most affected by the war. Currently, 16 volunteer doctors are taking turns traveling to de-occupied villages along the Ukraine-Russia border and front-line areas, providing critically needed medical and dental care to the vulnerable civilians who remain living there.

In September 2024, the 9th mission of Lithuanian doctors went to Ukraine. Each mission lasts 2-4 weeks. The doctors travel in small but highly effective teams of 3-4 specialists from different fields, including general practitioners, odontologists, and nurses. All the doctors are volunteers who go to Ukraine during their vacations. They do not receive payment for their work, but Blue/Yellow takes care of their transport, accommodation, and medical supplies.

Although these missions officially began in the second half of 2023, the story started much earlier. The founders of Blue/Yellow Medical, Skirmantas and Vaiva, first traveled to Ukraine in the spring of 2022 to help the residents of Bucha right after its liberation. Their accumulated experience is invaluable and ensures that the missions provide real, tangible help where it is needed most.

The Lithuanian doctors bring mobile equipment and large quantities of medical supplies, enabling them to effectively help people living in extremely difficult conditions. They not only diagnose illnesses and provide immediate assistance but also create treatment plans and supply patients with enough medication for at least three months. It is common practice for Blue/Yellow Medical teams to return to previously visited villages every few months for follow-up visits and to continue patient care. The participation of odontologists in these missions is crucial, as dental help is almost impossible to access in the de-occupied areas due to the lack of specialized equipment and personnel.

Working at a bus stop, in the garden of a residential house, or even in the ruins – these are common situations to which the doctors easily adapt. They work in places where, due to the proximity of the front line and constant shelling, volunteers from other international aid organizations never go. They save those who may not survive until the end of the war without the care that is being provided now.

Since the summer of 2024, a combat surgeon who previously worked in a war field hospital has joined the Blue/Yellow team. During his mission, he not only provided necessary aid to Ukrainian soldiers but also brought back important knowledge about tactical medicine in this war.

The small Blue/Yellow Medical team is not waiting for the war to end; they are already battling the terrible consequences of it. You can help them now by setting up a monthly donation on our website and choosing “Blue/Yellow Medical” (https://blue-yellow.lt/en/#regular).
